The Bunya Pine Trees date back to Pre - Jurassic age. The tall Pine trees can grow up to 35-45 metres high and live for approximately 600 years. The pine cones that fall each year can weigh up to 10 kilograms, and contain bunya nuts. The best harvests only occur every 2-3 years so this make them a highly sought after indigenous food. The trees with their large edible seeds are very important and culturally significant to indigenous communities, particularly in Queensland.
Bunya nuts have a creamy, starchy texture and flavour similar to a chestnut
